Day 7 of our trip to Norway. The day began uneventfully as we drove to our next location. This being Norway there were, of course, some spectacular views that punctuated our drive along the motorway. This was one. A lake that was perfectly still and reflected the hills like a mirror.
But otherwise, not much to report until we reached our farmstay in Aurland. Here’s a shot of its location, and some interesting artwork on one of the buildings. It’s run by a young Norwegian couple and their children as a sustainable eco-tourist location.
More shots tomorrow.
In the late afternoon we set off on an organised hike with a local guide. She took us on a steep uphill walk to a nearby waterfall. Spectacularly powerful as waterfalls in Norway are want to be.
Next port of call was a viewing of the Aurlandfjord. The road up to the viewpoint is known as the Snow Road and is closed most of the year. Summer is the exception. It’s extremely narrow and doesn’t actually fit two cars, so there’s a lot of reversing into bays etc. That was OK – it gave us an opportunity to take some photos on the drive up.
Most people who head up the mountain stop at Stegastein Lookout which has a world-beating viewing platform. We stopped for a few minutes too and took some photos.
I’m looking a bit worried here don’t you think? We WERE on a timber platform out in space after all…
But our guide knew a better spot to grab great views of the fjord, so we continued up the mountain and then hiked further up to a rock platform. Astounding. Incredible. Awe-inspiring. Like nothing we’ve seen before in our lives and nothing we’ll see again….simply breath-taking. We shared a cup of coffee and locally baked cinnamon rolls whilst we admired the view sitting on a sheepskin on the rock platform. You don’t get many sublime moments in life. But this was one of them. From here on, I can only add photos though they don’t really do it justice.
Great way to end a day…
